Material Overview

Why Engineers Choose Aluminum

Aluminum alloys offer a unique combination of properties that make them indispensable in modern product design and industrial manufacturing -- especially for high-volume, precision-critical applications.

Exceptional Strength-to-Weight Ratio

At just 2.7 g/cm³ -- one-third the density of steel -- aluminum delivers structural rigidity without unnecessary mass, critical for aerospace, robotics, and portable devices.

Natural Corrosion Resistance

Aluminum forms a self-protecting oxide layer, making it inherently resistant to rust and environmental degradation -- suitable for outdoor, marine, and humid environments.

Outstanding Machinability

Aluminum cuts cleanly and quickly, reducing tool wear and cycle time. This translates directly to lower per-part cost -- especially valuable for prototype runs and medium-volume batches.

Excellent Thermal & Electrical Conductivity

With conductivity roughly 60% that of copper at a fraction of the weight, aluminum is a preferred material for heat sinks, bus bars, enclosures, and electronic housings.

Broad Surface Treatment Compatibility

Aluminum accepts a wide range of finishing options -- anodizing, powder coating, chromate conversion, polishing -- enabling functional and aesthetic customization for end-use parts.

Fully Recyclable & Sustainable

Aluminum is 100% recyclable without loss of properties, aligning with sustainability goals and reducing lifecycle environmental impact -- an increasing procurement requirement in Europe and beyond.

Common Questions

Aluminum Parts FAQ

What is the tightest tolerance Xu Feng can hold on aluminum CNC parts?
For standard CNC milling and turning operations on aluminum, Xu Feng routinely achieves tolerances of ±0.01mm. For critical features requiring tighter control, our 5-axis machining centers can achieve ±0.005mm. Always specify your tightest critical tolerances on the drawing -- our DFM review will confirm feasibility and flag any features that may require special fixturing or process steps.
Which aluminum alloy should I choose for a structural bracket?
For most structural brackets, 6061-T6 is the default recommendation. It offers a strong balance of tensile strength (310 MPa), excellent machinability, good weldability, and outstanding anodizing quality -- all at a competitive material cost. If your application involves extreme loads, cyclic fatigue, or weight-critical aerospace requirements, upgrade to 7075-T6 for its higher tensile strength (572 MPa). Our engineers are happy to review your load requirements and recommend the optimal grade.
Does anodizing affect dimensional tolerances on my parts?
Yes -- anodizing adds material to the surface. Type II anodizing typically adds 5-25μm per surface, while Type III (hard anodizing) adds 25-75μm per surface. For tight-tolerance holes, bores, or mating surfaces, you must account for this growth in your design. Specify "anodize after machining" or "machine after anodize" clearly on your drawing. Our DFM review will automatically flag any features where anodizing could cause tolerance issues.
What is the minimum order quantity for aluminum CNC parts?
There is no minimum order quantity for CNC machined aluminum parts -- we accept orders from a single prototype piece. For sheet metal fabrication, the practical minimum is typically 1-5 pieces depending on complexity. For metal stamping, economic quantities start at around 1,000 pieces due to tooling investment, though we can produce lower volumes for tooling validation and first article approval. Contact us for a tailored quote.
Can Xu Feng supply aluminum parts with full material and inspection documentation?
Yes. Xu Feng can provide a complete documentation package including: material test reports (MTR) from the mill, chemical composition certificates, mechanical property test results, CMM dimensional inspection reports, first article inspection (FAI) reports, and surface treatment certificates. This is particularly important for aerospace, medical, and defense customers. Please specify your documentation requirements when submitting your inquiry.
What is the typical lead time for aluminum CNC machined parts?
Standard lead time for aluminum CNC machined parts is 5-10 business days for prototype quantities (1-20 pieces) and 10-20 business days for production volumes. Rush processing is available for urgent requirements. Sheet metal fabrication typically runs 5-10 days. Stamping lead time depends on tooling status -- if tooling is already available, production parts can be delivered in 7-14 days. All lead times are confirmed at the time of order placement.
